A fundamental aspect of our teaching is sharing our natural and traditional way of living in total harmony with Mother Nature. We want to inspire others to benefit from the practice of medicinal and master plants that nature generously offers us. For the Shipibo people, the plants of the forest are alive; they feel, communicate, and have the power to teach us. We believe that each plant has it’s “genius,” or spirit. These are the spirits that we see and work with during ayahuasca ceremonies.
After many years of training, the apprentice then begins to work with others. Each curandero’s process is very different and is as unique as they are. Effective curanderos have undergone a rigorous training and a deep process of self reflection, and have acquired experiential knowledge through working continuously with plants. When the teacher feels their apprentice is finally ready, they then authorise them to begin working on their own. The Temple only works with fully trained and authorized curanderos. Both Jason and Valko have had many years experience working as tabaqueros prior to holding tobacco dietas with us.
To take your experience even deeper, you should also know your motivation: What is really behind the changes you want to see? What are the patterns or underlying conditions that may be getting in the way of what you are trying to achieve? Our mind is a powerful tool for exploring reality, with its full potential sometimes hidden behind the layers and layers of decades-long conditioning, life struggle, and emotional buildup. But if you are armed with a strong intention and clear motivations, Aya can gradually help to reassemble your being as one of full integrity, personal empowerment, and spiritual freedom.

The “learning” diet with Marosa is very powerful. It opens us to the powers of infinite dimensions, and teaches icaros with beautiful melodies so the healing can become more effective. Marosa is a world of pure medicine, with strength, power, and beautiful chants. The Shipibo consider this plant a “jealous” one, meaning that it is demanding in the diet that it requires. The diet must be fulfilled at exactly as prescribed by the shaman. If one is committed, it’s powers and benefits are incredible.
A dieta is a term used to describe a process of healing and learning from a plant. Unlike reading a book to learn about a plant, a dieta is a direct, experiential practice to learn from the plant. In this way, it is said that the plants teach us. Ultimately, all plant teachings point us towards the same truth, that of which we are; teaching us about nature, natural law, our true self, our place in this world, and opening us to worlds beyond the physical.
When one undergoes a dieta the focus is often on a particular plant best suited to the needs of the individual. “The chosen plant depends upon the personality structure of the patient and the goals of the therapists: some plants are indicated for connecting with emotions and childhood memories, others to strengthen a proper attitude, still others to break some resistances” (Mabit et al 1996). Such plants can include bobinsana/Calliandra angustifolia; toe/Brugmansia sp.; chiric sanango/Brunsfelsia sp.; oje/Ficus anthelmintica; tangarana/Triplaris sp., and the “king of brews,” aya-huasca/Banisteriopsis Caapi, along with its usual admixture chacruna/Psychotria viridis.
The profound understanding obtained through the study of the human experience and how the nervous system functions (specifically how it stores and changes what is learned) is an essential part of Valko´s work. His sincere commitment to the work of healing and awakening and his unique sense of humor lend a beautifully human and fun flavor to his work.
